Fees set for refuse pickup

The Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners has set a $330 fee for refuse collection in 2015 for residential owner-occupied dwellings. The fee for landlord-owned households is $370.

The fee scale was approved by commissioners at their Jan. 12 meeting. These fees reflect no change from the 2014 fee rate structure.

Under terms of the legislation, residents will receive once per week collection of garbage and recyclable materials.

There is permitted, in addition, a once-per-month collection of Freon appliances, at a cost of $25 cost per item.

In order to claim this benefit, customers are to purchase a label required by the township and affix it to the appliance to ensure collection.

Also at the meeting, the board amended an ordinance involving the police pension fund in order for it to comply with state laws and regulations recognizing the revised definition of "spouse" under state laws.

The change in defining "spouse" reads that "spouse" means a person married to the employee at the time of the determination, as evidenced by a marriage license valid under the laws of the place of issuance.

Commissioner Gerard Palagonia, a retired township police officer, abstained from the vote.

In other business, Lous Jany was reappointed to the township zoning hearing board of adjustment.

Palagonia said Jany "has done an outstanding job," serving for many years on the zoning appeals board.

Reappointed to the township building code board of appeals was Frank Krempasky.

Other reappointments confirmed by the commissioners include Stanley Wimmer, Whitehall Township Authority; Kent Newhart, industrial and Newhart, industrial and commercial development authority; Kevin Serensits, tax appeals board; Joseph Marx, Coplay-Whitehall Sewer Authority; Patrice Behrens, alternate-tax appeals board; Sharon Geroulo, industrial and commercial development authority; and Neil Ehrlichman, planning commission.

New appointments were approved for Frank Hesch and Donald Sillivan, who will serve on the industrial and commercial development authority.
