Pates hope to gain first-ever win over Easton
Freedom's wrestling team is 21-0.
Yes, that's how this winter has unfolded for the Patriots as they're enjoying their best ride ever to a season, but if the Patriots want to carry a little more clout for their undefeated mark, a victory over Easton Wednesday will do that.
The Patriots are set to host the Rovers at 7 p.m. Wednesday night, as Freedom will look for their first-ever victory over Easton on senior night.
It's fair to say that the Pates don't need much more motivation heading into tonight's tilt against one of the most storied wrestling programs in the state.
"I recognize that we haven't wrestled the type of schedule that has Parkland, Nazareth and Bethlehem Catholic on it," said head coach Brandon Hall, "but the rest of our schedule is pretty much the same from a year ago. Our kids are very aware of where we stand in the Lehigh Valley and how we are perceived. We're all really looking forward to this match and our seniors definitely want to get a win over Easton on senior night."
The Pates took care of business over the weekend at the Juniata Duals, winning the tournament in relatively easy fashion, posting wins over Mount Union, Mount Carmel, Towanda, Norristown and West Perry.
The Pates held four of their five opponents under 10 points, as West Perry was able to top that mark in a 71-11 defeat.
With all the hype surrounding the Pates heading into this week, closing out the regular season on a high note is imperative, as they look to finish their regular season undefeated.
With Easton (11-4) and Saturday night's regular season finale at Liberty (6-5) as the final tests before duals, the Pates should be in good shape to show everyone that they are no fluke. The team also wrestles Pocono Mountain East at home on Thursday.
"I think we've shown everyone that our individual wrestlers have improved," said Hall, "but also that we've gotten better as a program too. That's just as important for us. We know these are important matches for us to show what we're really made of. It's really going to come down to us being able to get bonus points in matches we're favored and limiting bonus points in matches we're not favored. The coin flip always plays a role in matchups too, so we'll have to wait and see how that works out. But in tough dual meets, it's always the race to 30 (points)."
