Hawks win at Escape the Rock
The accolades keep rolling in for Bethlehem Catholic's wrestling team, as the Hawks ran away with the team title at the Escape the Rock tournament at Council Rock South over the weekend.
The Golden Hawks kept that golden theme going in the 42-team tournament, compiling 209.5 team points to keep a sizable distance from runner-up Cumberland Valley (156) in the team standings, as Becahi had six finalists and four champions to take away from their weekend trek.
Jake Riegel (120), Stephen Maloney (138), Mikey Labriola (152) and Andrew Dunn (220) all took home championships to cap off an impressive weekend.
"This was the best finish we've had at this tournament," said head coach Jeff Karam. "Usually Blair Academy is in this, but they weren't this year, but I think the tournament was as deep as its ever been. I thought the guys wrestled really well and I'm just really proud of how hard these guys work everyday."
The Hawks had a mixed bag of results in the finals, ranging from Riegel's 2-1 decision over Exeter's Bret Kulp, to Dunn's 10-5 win over Patrick Grayson of Colonial Forge (Va.) in the champions department.
Maloney posted a 7-3 decision over Cumberland Valley's Felix Belga, while Labriola scored a 5-3 win over Southern Columbia's Billy Barnes.
Joey Gould (132) and Luke Karam (126) both lost their championship bouts, as Gould was pinned in 3:31 by Georgetown Prep's (Md.) Eric Hong, who was a prep champion last season. Karam fell victim to a 3-2 defeat to last year's NJSIAA 120-pound champion Anthony Cefolo of Hanover Park to give the Hawks a sense of mortality in the tournament.
Becahi's (6-0, 5-0) dominance this season has been a surprise to their head coach, considering the Hawks only employ two senior starters, which is bad news for the rest of the state moving forward.
Prior to the tournament, the Hawks defeated the likes of Parkland, Easton and Nazareth in dual meets by a combined score of 140-22 over the past two weeks.
With dual meets against Whitehall, Liberty, East Sroudsburg North and Emmaus to round out the season before district duals, the Hawks aren't showing any signs of letting up moving forward.
"Honestly, I am surprised by how we've been able to perform this year," Karam said. "I thought next year would be our year because we're so young. I think some of our dual meet scores against Parkland, Easton and Nazareth can be a little misleading, because we had some tough bouts. We won a bunch of one-point matches and had the advantage of winning the coin flip too, which allowed us to dictate things a little. We've been well tested over the past two weeks and now we just have to keep our focus moving forward."
Three other Hawks also placed at the Escape the Rock, as Luke Carty (113) and Cole Karam (145) each took eighth, while Adam Soldridge (160) finished in sixth.
