Girls fall to PHS

All things considered, Liberty High School's girls swim team knew its 107-79 loss to Parkland last week would be a good challenge for them.

Liberty captain, Jocelyn Baker, said, "We were really excited for this meet. We knew it would be a fast one. Win or lose, we'd see what we could do. Right now, we're really competitive."

The Hurricanes had two first place victories, one by Kayla Drago in the 50 free with a time of 25.97, and one by Julia McCarthy in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.38.

Second places finishes were won by McCarthy in the 200 IM with a time of 2:14.96, Drago in the 100 free with a time of 56.79, and Grace Walters in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.75.

Baker finished third in two events, the 200 free with a time of 2:03.11, and the 500 free with a time of 5:27.77.

"There are a lot of competitive, fast girls in all of the events. Right from the start [in the 200 free], I saw both Parkland girls get out ahead of me. In the second 100, I knew I could pick it up. At the end, the girl to my right in lane six, I was right at her feet, so I just tried to stay with her," said Baker.

Walters also had a third place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.75, and Rachel Finn took third place in diving with 200.90 points.

In the 200 medley relay, the first event of the day, Liberty had a 2-3-4 finish.

"Second and third place are really important. We're overcoming their first place with points or closing the gap and not losing too many points to them," Baker said.
