EMMAUS BOROUGH COUNCIL Landis Circle will now be a one-way street

The Emmaus Borough Council unanimously passed ordinance 1119 at the Jan. 19 meeting. This ordinance will establish Landis Circle as a one-way street in the northerly direction. Council plans to write another ordinance to limit parking to certain sections of Landis Circle.

In other business, Greg Walls, commander of the Catholic War Veterans of Emmaus, spoke before council regarding a late notice for a refuse bill he received. The refuse bill was for 721 Furnace St., which is the office and meeting place for the Catholic War Veterans. When the building was purchased 12 years ago they were annexed and granted tax exemption.

"This summer I got a late notice on the refuse bill," Walls said. "I paid it with objections, but I did not come here before borough council because I know at one of your meetings you brought it up and it was passed at the meeting that we shouldn't have to pay."

Walls said after receiving the current bill, he decided to come before council and request an exemption.

"I know you can't pass a law, but we found we wouldn't have to pay as long as it was part of our business so I'm asking for an exemption."

Some members of council questioned Walls on whether or not the group was renting the upstairs apartment. Walls said the upstairs is used as an office and the downstairs is used for meetings. He also mentioned Lehigh County has been there three times in the past 12 years to check the use of the building, the last time in 2012.

Councilman Brian Holtzhafer, acting president for the night, said the issue should go through the health and sanitation committee at its next meeting. "I believe some of council was under the impression there was an upstairs rental in there, and knowing there isn't is a different story."

Council voted to lease three parking spaces to Switchback Pizza, which plans on opening on Jubilee Street. Council will charge the pizza shop $100 a month, which Councilman Wesley Barrett noted is just over $1 per space each day.

Griff Harold was appointed to the Parks and Recreation Commission with a term expiring May 1, 2016.

Christopher Heckler was appointed to the Joint Environmental Advisory Council with a term expiring March 7, 2015.

Both Ellen Wilson and Linda Waddell were reappointed to the Emmaus Arts Commission with Wilson's term expiring Feb. 7, 2018 and Waddell's term expiring Feb. 1, 2018.

The Emmaus Veterans Committee requested a waiver to use the Lions Pavilion June 20. The committee will be holding a picnic for all war veterans to thank them for their dedication and service. Council approved this first time request 5-0.
