'Daring, passionate and beautiful'

The internationally-acclaimed Koresh Dance Company is known for its captivating performances and technically-superb dancers. Founded by Israeli-born choreographer and artistic director, Ronen Koresh, the company's vast repertoire of work ranges from intimate to high-voltage, and astonishes audiences around the world with a dazzling array of dance forms and styles.

The Koresh Dance Company performs at 8 p.m. Jan. 31, Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown.

Koresh founded the company in 1991 and opened The Koresh School of Dance in 1993 in Philadelphia. The school, located in the heart of center city in Rittenhouse Square, serves as a valuable dance instruction center for the region.

The Koresh Dance Company is composed of 10 dancers who range in age from 24 to 43.

"There's not too much of a turnover," says Koresh in an interview from Philadelphia, the city he has called home for 31 years.

The company offers an exciting blend of ballet, modern and jazz.

"Our style is contemporary and modern," Koresh says. "It is quite accessible, not abstract. [Our shows are] driving, daring, passionate and beautiful."

Koresh's brothers, Alon and Nir, are board members of the company, serving as executive director and scheduling manager. Fifteen talented instructors teach diverse styles ranging from tap to Latin fusion to hip-hop.

The Koresh School of Dance strives to be an artistic force by creating new and innovative performances. The school offers classes and workshops for adults and children. In addition, the Koresh Kids Dance program brings free arts education to Philadelphia youth.

Koresh choreographs most of the dance works himself, although he occasionally utilizes talented guest choreographers. A typical touring season, from September to May, has taken the company to Mexico, Spain, Korea, Israel, Guatemala and the Far East. The troupe is now touring the United States.

"We are excited to be back in Allentown," says Koresh. "We have good friends and supporters there."

When asked what sets the company apart, Koresh says it's "an ability to connect to the audience. It's a shared experience. There's a sense of urgency in our movement.

"What we do deals with humanity, relationships, community and the individual. People are drawn to that, the integrity of it. [Our performances are about] desires, dreams, failures and hopes.

"Plus, it's athletic, graceful and fast-moving."

Since dance can be a powerful and transformative medium, Koresh believes the audience can, and should, be taken on a journey while watching a performance.

"Sit back and relax. Shut your brain off and let the logic of the body experience what it should experience."
