What an "Act": "Sister Act," above, takes the stage 7:30 p.m. Jan. 30 at the State Theatre Center for the Arts, Easton. "Sister Act," based on the film comedy of the same name, features the music of Tony and Oscar-winning composer, Alan Menken. He received the 2012 Tony Award for Best Original Score for "Newsies" and was nominated the year before that for "Sister Act." The musical was written by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner with additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane. The lyrics were provided by Glenn Slater to accompany the music of Menken. Whoopi Goldberg, who played Deloris Van Cartier in the "Sister Act" films, is a producer of the Broadway adaption. "Sister Act" tells the story of Van Cartier, a wannabe diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime and the police hide her in a convent. Under the watch of Mother Superior, Van Cartier helps the nuns find their voices as she rediscovers her own. Elvis in the building: In 1997, two of the world's top Elvis entertainers joined forces for the first time with the "Elvis Birthday Bash," above, at the State Center for the Arts, Easton. For the 19th consecutive year, the ultimate tribute show to the King of Rock 'n' Roll is back for a matinee performance at 3 p.m. Jan. 25. The "Elvis Birthday Bash" pays homage to Presley with the young heartbreaker and the seasoned "Vegas-style" Elvis. Scot Bruce portrays Elvis' early years while Mike Albert delivers the 1970's Elvis. They both will take you beyond the world of Elvis impersonators. From "Hound Dog" to "Suspicious Minds" and everything in between, this is a tribute to the King that will leave you screaming for more.
