PHS routed by Golden Hawks
It was not a memorable night for the Trojan wrestling team. It was one they surely wanted to forget as soon as they left Parkland High School gymnasium.
The Golden Hawks won all but one bout, and cruised to a 51-3 win to stay unbeaten in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.
"I think every time you compete you have to look at each individual performance," said Parkland head coach Ryan Nunamaker. "And we had seven winnable bouts that we lost by one or two points. If you win any of those you give yourself an even better opportunity to win as a team. But when you lose each one of them it's tough to gain any momentum."
One of the closest bouts was an exciting, back-and-forth triple overtime 6-4 decision for Abe Khier against teh Hawks' Brandon Gallagher at 160 pounds.
"Abe's someone that is relatively new to wrestling and to our program, and to be able to compete like he did shows a lot about his desire to win," said Nunamaker. "He does exactly what he is supposed to do and he wants to win. He did a great job tonight."
Of the 13 wins, seven bouts were decided by three points to less.
The match started with a forfeit for Jake Riegel, a defending state champion, at 120 pounds. Luke Karam, another state champ, used a first-period takedown for a 2-0 decision over Jacob Lizak at 126.
Back-to-back 1-0 decisions by Joey Gould (132) and Stephen Maloney (138) made it 15-0 in favor of the Golden Hawks.
Cole Karam dominated Anthony Chidiac at 145, earning a 17-1 technical fall. Mike Labriola then pinned Rob Wetherhold in 2:54 at 152 pounds.
Adam Soldridge (170), Jody Crouse (182), Sean Redington (106) and Luke Carty (113) all won close decisions while Brandon Blobe won a major decision at 195 for Becahi.
A bright spot for the Trojans is how they did respond to this defeat. Over the weekend, Parkland went 5-0 in the Parkland Duals as several wrestlers finished unbeated over the five matches.
