Freedom honors newest HOF class
Freedom's athletic department honored their newest Athletic Hall of Fame Class last night in between their girls and boys basketball games against Central Catholic.
The fourth induction of the athletic Hall of Fame included Richard Baska, Wayne Marish, Jim Broughal and the 2002 state championship girls tennis team.
Baska coached the boys basketball team for 15 years, where his 1976 team won the school's only District 11 championship. The 1980-81 team won the East Penn League Division Championship and enjoyed 23 wins on the year. Baska would go on to coach Central Catholic's program, where his teams won four straight District 11 3A titles from 1992-95.
Baska is a member of the Lehigh Valley High School Basketball Hall of Fame and has worked as a color analyst for Service Electric for the past 20 years.
Wayne Marish was the head track coach at Freedom from 1983-86 and head golf coach from 1987-2008. His golf teams won 151 matches during his 21 years at the helm. He was selected as the Lehigh Valley Golfer of the Year in 1990 and was recognized as one of the top 100 college golfers from the Middle Atlantic Conference over the past century for his time playing at Moravian.
James Broughal graduated from Freedom in 1994 and was a two-time state swimming champion in the 100 Butterfly and 100 Freestyle. He was a High School All-American in 1994 and continued his swimming at East Carolina University.
The 2002 state championship tennis team team finished 10-1 in league play and 19-1 on the season under Karen Kohn's guidance.
The team won the Lehigh Valley Conference championship and defeated Northampton for the district title.
The team defeated Mercyhurst Prep, Latrobe and Lower Merion for the PIAA championship.
