Even after lopsided win, Hawks look to improve

When looking at the final score of last Wednesday night's dual-meet between Bethlehem Catholic and Parkland, one would think it was a lopsided match that the Golden Hawks simply did everything right. But when asked after Becahi's commanding 51-3 victory to stay unbeaten in the East Penn Conference at 5-0, head coach Jeff Karam said otherwise.

"I think this match was very lackluster on our part," Karam said. "I just felt the fire wasn't there on our part."

But if the fire wasn't there, the wins certainly were. And one of the marquee wins came at the 220 pound class where Andrew Dunn scored a 3-1 win over Omar Haddad in a matchup of the region's top two 220-pound wrestlers.

It was his third career victory over Haddad. Dunn won it on the strength of a late first-period takedown and an early second-period escape.

"Haddad's a tough kid and he slows the match down," noted Karam. "It was important for (Dunn) to stay on his attacks. Keep forcing the action and not get frustrated. I think that was one of those matches where the score was close, but I never felt we were in danger of losing."

The Golden Hawks won all but one bout, a back-and-forth 6-4 triple overtime decision for Abe Khier against Brandon Gallagher at 160 pounds. But none of the wins came easy for Becahi.

Of the 13 wins, seven bouts were decided by three points to less.

The match was started off with a forfeit for Jake Riegel, a defending state champion, at 120 pounds. Luke Karam, another state champ, used a first-period takedown for a 2-0 decision over Jacob Lizak at 126.

Back-to-back 1-0 decisions by Joey Gould (132) and Stephen Maloney (138) made it 15-0 in favor of the Golden Hawks.

Cole Karam dominated Anthony Chidiac at 145, earning a 17-1 technical fall. Mike Labriola then pinned Rob Wetherhold in 2:54 at 152 pounds.

Adam Soldridge (170), Jody Crouse (182), Sean Redington (106) and Luke Carty (113) all won close decisions while Brandon Blobe won a major decision at 195 for Becahi.

"Parkland is a tough team," Karam added. "They're tough to score on. They slow the match down. From a coaching standpoint, it's very frustrating. But I was happy to come out of here with a win."

Becahi marched right back two days later and took down another powerhouse in Easton 45-9.
