The school nurses have placed an important message about the flu on the district website. Incidence of the flu is spiking in the Lehigh Valley.

The flu, also known as influenza, is characterized by high fever, aches, headache, fatigue, cough and sometimes runny nose. Adults are usually contagious for up to five days while children can be contagious for up to a week. Keep sick children at home. Sending sick children to school puts others at risk. Children need to be fever free and off of fever reducing medication for 24 hours prior to returning to school.

To help prevent getting the flu, everyday preventative actions are: cover mouth and nose when coughing, wash hands often with soap and water, avoid close contact with sick people, avoid touching eyes nose and mouth. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention also urges most people to get the flu shot.
