Spotlight On: 'Disney On Ice' a first at PPL Center
You might say the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, has been putting on quite a show on the home ice during the inaugural season at PPL Center in downtown Allentown.
However, the real show arrives when the first ice show debuts at the new arena: "Disney On Ice Presents Worlds Of Fantasy," 7 p.m. Jan. 7, 8 and 9; 11 a.m. and 3 and 7 p.m. Jan. 10, and noon and 4 p.m. Jan. 11.
Skaters portraying popular Disney characters from animated film hits, including Buzz Lightyear, Woody and Jessie from "Toy Story," Ariel from "The Little Mermaid," Lightning McQueen from "Cars" and Tinker Bell from "Peter Pan," will put on the blades for the family entertainment show.
Sasha Lanser, who plays Tinker Bell in "Worlds Of Fantasy," has been skating since she was a six-year-old in England.
"I always knew this was what I wanted to do," she says in a phone interview. "I fell in love as soon as I stepped on the ice."
Of playing "Tink," Lanser says. "She's so much fun to play. In this show, Tinker Bell learns to find her talent and that it's OK to be who you are."
Lanser loves seeing the children in the audience wonder at the skating and special effects in the show.
"I see children of all ages enjoy the show: newborns, boys, girls, parents, everyone."
She especially enjoys the music numbers in the production. "'Under the Sea' from 'The Little Mermaid' is a really fun one. The kids love it when the bubbles come down."
Lanser describes herself as a "Disney Kid" who grew up watching the Disney movies depicted in the show. "I was a big 'Toy Story' fan growing up," she says. "I still am.
"All the children in the audience love to see their favorite characters from 'Toy Story' come to life in the 'Disney on Ice' show. There are Jesse and Woody and even Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head."
As part of the touring production of "Disney On Ice," Lanser has been able to travel the world.
"I've been to places that I never thought I would be able to see, like South Africa."
She encourages boys and girls who want to skate to follow their dreams.
"Go after your dream. Never give up until you reach it and are satisfied."
