LHS girls also win
Liberty High School's girls swim team took first place in nine out of 12 events in the Hurricanes victory over Southern Lehigh, 123-63, on Jan. 3.
Maggie Walters, Emily Buell, Anna Lehr, and Kayla Drago combined to win the 200 free relay for the Hurricanes in 1:46.86, and Drago, Sabrina Krotzer, Jocelyn Baker, and Julia McCarthy won the 400 free relay in 3:53.43.
Drago, a junior, placed second in the 50 free, missing first place by .22 seconds.
"It was pretty close the whole way. It takes me awhile to get going on the first lap, and then I have to catch up. I'm slower off the blocks, so I have to work harder to make up the distance," Drago said.
Later in the meet, Drago won the 100 free with a time of 56.66.
"I always like having a strategy. The advice my coaches give me is to race to the 75. The last lap is everything I have left," said Drago. "I usually try to breathe to both sides so I can see how far ahead or behind I am. When they're closer, I try to kick more and increase my hand speed. Going in and out of turns, I go faster and breathe less."
Jocelyn Baker was a double event winner in the 200 free with a time of 2:02.23 and the 500 free with a time of 5:28.77. Julia McCarthy also won two events, the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.34 and the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.86.
Grace Walters took first place in the 100 fly with a time of 1:02.78, and Paige McCloskey placed first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:07.29.
Liberty will have faced Nazareth at home on Tuesday, past Press deadlines, and will travel to Pocono Mountain East on Thursday.
