Gunning wins Classic

Andrew Gunning was out of breathe by the time he came off the mats from the Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic last week, but it was all for good reason.

Gunning was one of four Liberty wrestlers in the finals of the Hurricanes home tournament and he was the lone school representative to come away with a gold medal, as he scored the winning takedown over Wyoming Seminary's Harrison Nye with less than six seconds left in the 220-pound championship.

Gunning trailed 3-2 with less than 10 seconds on the clock and took a shot at the six second mark, which eventually paved the way to a BHWC championship, the first for the Gunning family.

Andrew's older brother Jake, a redshirt freshman at the University of Buffalo, has won district and regional crowns, but never won the BHWC.

"It feels awesome," said Gunning. "I really just wanted to win. Wrestling in your tournament at home definitely helps. I wanted to win this for all the fans too and I hope that was a crowd pleaser. I know I enjoyed it."

Wyoming Seminary won the team title with 272.5 points, as Phillipsburg (198) and Nazareth (160) rounded out the top three in the team standings.

Liberty finished seventh overall with 137.5, a spot behind Freedom (148) in the standings.

The Hurricanes had four finalists in the tournament, as Luke Werner (106), KJ Fenstermacher (120) and John Ritter (138) reached the finals, but all came away with silver medals.

Freedom's Adam Evans was the lone Patriot in the finals, as he lost to Council Rock South's Dylan Schwartz 3-1 in overtime.

Council Rock's Riley Palmer scored a 15-4 major decision over Werner, while Central Dauphin's Zach Elvin trumped Ritter 7-2.

Fenstermacher fell to Jack Mueller of Wyoming Seminary 8-4 to present the Liberty sophomore his first loss of the season.

"I know I have to push my offense more," said Fenstermacher. "This is going to motivate me a lot to get back in the room to work harder. It's not a good feeling to lose."

Liberty wrestled in their first dual meet since the BHWC last Saturday, topping Pleasant Valley 48-21 in a bout where the Bears forfeited five matches.

The Hurricanes (2-2, 1-2) host Nazareth (3-1, 3-0) tonight before setting their sights on Emmaus (2-4, 1-2) Saturday.
