Rusnock pleased with team's direction
With his squad's tournament season winding down, Catasauqua head wrestling coach Kyle Rusnock has been pleased with the overall tone and direction of his team.
"We have been really working hard," said the first-year head coach. "We have had some pretty good performances and results. We were challenged in our tournaments and the kids responded well."
The Roughies recently competed in the highly touted Berwick Duals that featured a majority of 3A teams. Overall, Catty posted a 1-4 record in team competition, but they had several strong individual performances.
Satchel Stauffer finished the competition with an overall 5-0 mark and both Tyler Youseff and Ryan Greene went 4-1 in the process.
"They had outstanding performances," Rusnock said in reference to his wrestlers. "We were facing schools that were bigger than us in size. Southern Columbia has an outstanding program and they can be compared to Bethlehem Catholic in our area. Berwick and Pottsville both have very good programs and were able to hold our own against them.
"We had a close match with Oley Valley and we ended the tournament with a win over Tamaqua. That was nice. Every one of our wrestlers really improved themselves and they all got a good test up there.
"They all placed in some fashion and that's great for us."
Rusnock is also confident Ben Nosal - who suffered a broken collarbone in football - and Anthony Stahl - who has been battling weight issues - can return to the lineup soon to form a complete unit. He also was excited about the recent return of Devin Greene, who suffered a concussion, to the lineup.
"We're hoping to get those guys back soon," said Rusnock. "Ben (Nosal) has been progressing well and Anthony (Stahl) is getting close to making weight. It's great to get Devin (Greene) and Mikey (Shutta) back recently.
"We're putting everything together at the right time."
Rusnock noted the team will participate in the Hamburg Duals this weekend before they resume with Colonial League play with Palisades Jan. 5.
The Roughies have a 2-2 mark in duals meets.
"We'll get another get test with the Hamburg Duals," said Rusnock. "Then we come right back and face a good Palisades team. It will be difficult for us to be in the league and district duals this year as we may not be there yet.
"But I expect this team to compete and keep working. We'll have some strong individual efforts and some good team showings."
