LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Coplay column

Coplay may be quieter than it has been some years, but there's still much going on for New Year's Eve.

As in the past, Coplay Saengerbund will host a dance and dinner this year. Polkas and meals have traditionally been on its itinerary. Guests have pork, mashed potatoes and sauerkraut, after which they put on their party hats and streamers and dance to the music of Emil Schanta.

The American Club will be hosting private parties and the American Legion will hold an open house.

Many households will keep their celebrations close to home, inviting family members over and watching the countdown to the ball drop at Times Square in New York City.

For those hoping night baseball will return to Sammy Balliet Stadium in 2015, the word is they may have to wait at least until 2016.

With much work already done in restoring the diamond to its former luster, the lack of lighting remains an issue. Formerly, the field attracted PIAA high school playoff games and American Legion District playoffs.

It is hoped that fundraisers and possibly state grants could fill the void and pay for lighting by 2016.

For those asking if Coplay Sports Inc. lights could fill the bill, the answer is no. Although suitable for the youngsters playing on the Coplay Sports diamond, the lighting could not do the job for an American Legion baseball program.
