A Whitehall victory in the first event of Liberty's swim meet against the Zephyrs recently failed to rattle the Hurricane girls in their eventual 98-72 win at Whitehall.
Liberty captain, Grace Walters, said, "We were maybe a little thrown off, but our thoughts were just to proceed with all the individual events and see how those went."
First place finishes in six events, along with second and third place finishes, gave the Hurricanes enough points to prevail. In the 200 medley relay, for example, Paige McCloskey, Chloe Kobus, Walters, and Kayla Drago placed second, which is significant because relays garner more points than individual events.
The Hurricanes then came back to win the 200 free relay in 1:45.97 with the team of Anita Kundu, Emily Buell, Anna Lehr, and Julia McCarthy, and the 400 free relay in 3:49.31 with the team of McCarthy, Jocelyn Baker, Maggie Walters, and Drago.
In individual events, McCarthy took first place in the 200 free in 1:58.44 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.88. Drago was also a double event winner, placing first in the 50 free in 26.17, and placing first in a close finish in the 100 free with a time of 56.99.
Some Liberty swimmers competed in events they do not usually compete in, giving them the opportunity to try new events and improve on their times.
"I never swim the 500 free, so it was extra rough," Walters said.
Liberty's next meet is scheduled for Dec. 23 at William Allen High School.
