Hawks reflect on their 2014 season with pride

A 12-win season, a trip to the state quarterfinals and back-to-back District 11 3A championships is what Bethlehem Catholic's football team can look back upon when they review 2014.

But head coach Joe Henrich is always going to be disappointed with how things ended during their 30-0 defeat to Somerset that ended their ride through the PIAA tournament.

"Nothing can take away from winning two straight district titles and being one of the few teams to have won 12 games in a year at Becahi," said Henrich. "I just felt that we did not perform our best against Somerset. We didn't play to our capabilities. Everything at that stage of the season becomes magnified and when you aren't disciplined, accountable and don't take care of the football, you have results like the one we had."

Despite Becahi graduating the likes of offensive weapons Freddie Simmons (WR) and Michael McDaniel (RB), there is plenty of ammunition returning on both sides of the ball in 2015 that could land Becahi in the lead position to win their third straight district crown.

Quarterback Julian Spigner will be back for his senior year, along with running back Antwan Keenan, who suffered a season ending leg injury early in his junior campaign.

EJ Fineran, who made his mark as an impressive wideout this season as a junior, will lead the receiving corps next season.

Sophomore Damian Diaz, who shared carries in the backfield when Keenan went down, gained experience for his final two years moving forward.

The majority of Becahi's linebacking core returns, as well as some solid pieces on the line to have Becahi looking at a promising 2015.

"We take a look at everything in the off-season and there's a lot of pride here," Henrich said. "There's a recipe for how we got here and now that it's in place, it's a lot easier to sell this to the younger kids coming up. I don't see any reason why we can't be this type of team next year."

But as far as this year, it's always tough to say goodbye.

"It was a fun year and a great ride," Henrich said. "Only a couple teams can last as long as we did. It's just tough when it's over."
