Bethlehem Catholic crowns seven champs

Bethlehem Catholic did what they were supposed to do in the 47th annual Tony Iasiello Christmas City Tournament over the weekend.

The Golden Hawks stormed through their host tournament, claiming seven champions en route to running away with the team title, collecting 259 points to easily outdistance themselves from second place Upper Perkiomen (172.5 points).

Mikey Lewis (106), Luke Carty (113), Jake Riegel (120), Luke Karam (126) Stephen Maloney (138), Mike Labriola (152) and Andrew Dunn (220) each came home with gold medals as Becahi took the first four championship bouts in winning fashion.

Most of the Hawks championship exploits came easily, such as Lewis' 19-3 technical fall over Notre Dame's Ryan McGuire to kick things off, but some of the championship bouts were difficult and Jake Riegel experienced that in his title bout with Dustin Steffenino of Upper Perkiomen.

Riegel escaped with a 3-2 victory that bled every second of the third period in dramatic fashion, as his 3-1 lead with 17 seconds left turned into a near nightmare as he was hit with a penalty point for fleeing the mat.

That turned into a near-takedown by McGuire when he got in deep on a single leg, but never got control to keep victory out of his grasp.

For Riegel, who won the PIAA 2A tournament last year at 106-pounds, the bout was a welcoming opportunity in a tournament that saw four of Becahi's champs win by either technical fall or fall.

"It's good to have a match like that because it helps with my confidence and mat awareness," Riegel said. "I knew it would be close, but I didn't wrestle my best. I was too defensive. I need to work on my offense more."

Luke Karam had little trouble on offense against Notre Dame's Mario Gordon, scoring a 20-5 technical fall in 3:44 in the 126-pound championship.

Fresh off his Beast of the East title, Karam rode the momentum he had into his home gymnasium.

"I've been wrestling really well as of late and I kept that going into this tournament," Karam said. "After wrestling at such a tough tournament like the Beast, I know a lot of our guys were beat up and it's nice to come home and take care of things here."

Luke Carty won his 113-pound title with a 17-0 tech fall in 5:07 over Pocono Mountain West's Gregory Sheppard. Stephen Maloney (138) won a 6-0 decision over Upper Perk's Eric Miller, while Mikey Labriola squeaked out a 2-1 decision over Jeff Inman of Annville-Cleona.

Andrew Dunn rounded out the BC champions with his torrid form, pinning Wallenpaupack's Kyle Hartman in 2:40.

Other Hawks to place in the tournament included Cole Karam (145, third), Adam Soldridge (170, third), Jody Crouse (182, fifth) and Niko Camacho (HWT, sixth).

For Karam, the results so far this season has made him feel confident about this team moving forward.

"I think we're better than we were a year ago," said the Hawks junior. "A lot of our younger guys are really stepping up and we're wrestling really well."
