Turkey Trot's 12th year

More than 1,400 participants raced and walked in Historic Bethlehem's 12th annual Turkey Trot 5K on Nov. 29, representing 24 states, including California and Alaska, and Denmark.

Jean Theman, Turkey Trot chair, said it was the first time in race history that the USA Track and Field Certified Course had to be changed because of snow.

"We had to change the course on Sand Island because it was too muddy," Theman said.

The 3.2 mile course started at the 1869 Luchenbach Mill in the Colonial Industrial Quarter by the Monocacy Creek, wound its way through the National Historic Landmark District of Historic Moravian Bethlehem, over a smaller section of Sand Island, and finished back at the mill.

"Over 70 teams that included families, schools, corporations and special interest groups participated," Theman said.

"It took quite a bit of planning to get sponsors to offset expenses," Theman said, "and we couldn't do it without all of our 70-plus volunteers.

"Many people travel back to Bethlehem to visit family over the holiday, and that's how we have so many different states represented," she said.
