PHS girls basketball falls to Penn Wood at KU
For three quarters, it looked like Parkland was going to leave Kutztown University with a win over the Penn Wood Lady Patriots. In the final quarter though, Penn Wood seemed to hit every shot it put up, while the Lady Trojans weren't finding the hoop as easy. The final result was a 51-44 loss for Parkland, dropping them to 3-2 on the season, although their EPC record is still a perfect 3-0.
Parkland shot 33 percent from the field in the second half after hitting on 41 percent of its shots in the opening two quarters, which put the Trojans up 26-25 at the half.
"I thought they did a good job throughout the game of mixing up defenses," said Parkland head coach We Spence. "In the fourth quarter, we stopped hitting shots. That may be a result of how they did a good job of mixing things up and gave us different looks that got us a little unsettled. Their athleticism, I thought, sped us up and over the course of the game, we had stretches where we handled that well.
"In the fourth quarter, either way, the ball didn't go down. Whether it was because we were fatigued or rushing it and missing shots, sometimes the ball just doesn't go down for you."
In the early going, Aubrey Beidelman is establishing herself as an offensive threat for the Lady Trojans. Beidelman leads the team in scoring, averaging 10 points per game and picked up double-digit games with 14 against Penn Wood, following up her 13-point performance in a 51-37 win over Northampton.
"She's doing a really nice job and she's taking advantage of opportunities that she's getting within our offense," said Spence. "She's looking for shots and taking nice shots and she's making the most of the opportunities that she has. I'm really happy for her and she's doing well.
"It's helping us and it's creating some consistency, and I think we have a couple players who are starting to do that. They're finding their rhythm within the offense and they're starting to play well together."
In the win over Northampton, Nadine Ewald led the team with 16 points and is right behind Erica Bross for the second spot on the team in scoring. Spence generally plays a lot of girls in each game and has placed a priority on having everybody contribute and not leaning on any one or two girls to carry the team over the season. Beidelman believes that the plan works well and that lately, she's simply been the one that's benefiting from a strong offense.
"Our team runs a really good offense and we do a really good job of getting the girl with the hot hand the ball when she's hot," said Beidelman. "It's not just me, it's a lot of the girls. We have a lot of girls scoring double-digits in games and it's a team effort, honestly."
The loss to Penn Wood didn't sit well with Beidelman or her teammates
"We need to get a little work," she said. "It was a tough loss. There were some things that we could have done better today, like boxing out and not letting them get offensive rebounds. They got a lot of those. Also, denying [Bahnye Redd], who is a great player and had 30 points today. We've just got to come out and bring it against every team that we play."
