Patriot girls get by Allen

Freedom High School's girls swim team opened its meet against William Allen with a victory in the 200 medley relay, setting the tone for their 122-57 win over the Canaries last Thursday.

Carly DelFranco, Bridget Tarnowski, Helen Hsu, and Caitlin McCadden won the relay in 2:03.65 for the Patriots.

Individual event winners for Freedom were Shannon Howell in the 200 free in 2:03.52 and the 50 free in 26.86, and Hsu in the 200 IM in 2:15.70.

Madison Young won the diving event with 252.90 points, also for Freedom.

DelFranco took first place in the 100 fly in 1:06.16, Reilly Ward won the 100 free in 58.64, and Rachel Giles was first in the 500 free in 6:19.51.

Giles said, "I kind of like [the 500 free]. It gives you good stamina."

Giles does not typically swim that particular event.

"I'm open to trying new things. It's not a big deal. I was hoping to get a good time for the beginning of the season," said Giles.

In the 200 free relay, Ward, Hsu, Tarnowski, and McCadden took first place in 1:52.33. Tarnowski also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:23.04, and Giles won the 100 backstroke in 1:13.06. William Allen won the 400 free relay. Freedom's next swim meet is scheduled for Dec. 23.
