FHS boys beat Allen

Freedom High School's boys swim team added another victory to their record after defeating William Allen, 131-51, last Thursday.

Patriot swimmers, Colin Burnette, Brandon Burnette, Shjon Watlington, and Sam Magnan, opened the boys competition with a victory in the 200 medley relay in 1:53.20. Freedom boys captain, Trevor Watlington, won the 200 free in 2:08.14, Colin Burnette placed first in the 200 IM in 2:15.92, and Magnan was first in the 50 free in 24.86.

Trevor Watlington said, "It was my first time this year [swimming the 200 [JUMP]free]. It was tough, but I was trying to beat my brother, and I didn't want to lose. I felt good for the first 100, and then I got tired, but I pushed through it."

In diving, Freedom had a 1-2-3 finish led by John McGinty with 231.30 points, followed by Dan Corvino with 180.15 points, and Chris Cooke with 158.30 points.

Shjon Watlington won the 100 fly in 57.21 and the 100 free in 55.44. Freedom's Tyler Higgins also won two events, the 500 free in 5:18.13 and the 100 back in 1:02.54.

Brandon Burnette placed first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.80.

Swimmers from Allen won the 200 free relay, but Brian Seitz, Michael Auker, Jack Runco, and Troy Watlington took first place in the 400 free relay in 4:25.82.

Despite a small roster this year, the Patriot boys have some promising newcomers.

Trevor Watlington said, "It's working out pretty well. [The freshmen] are pretty talented. Our team seems to lack in numbers, but we have the talent, so it balances it out a lot."
