A 17-year-old Washington Township teen died when the vehicle she was driving hit a utility pole 2:44 p.m. Dec. 9 on Mountain Road, Washington Township, Lehigh County Chief Deputy Coroner Andrew Kehm says.
Crystal T. Schaller, of 7739 Furnace Road, was pronounced dead 4:20 p.m. by Kehm at the scene.
He said the cause of Schaller's death was multiple traumatic injuries.
The manner of her death was ruled an accident.
According to State Police Troop M Bethlehem, Schaller was driving a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta west on Mountain Road, approximately a half-mile west of Rextown Road, when the car left the roadway to the north and the undercarriage struck a cement culvert.
The car spun counterclockwise, first hit, then sheared a utility pole with its driver's side door and came to rest on its roof in the westbound lane of Mountain Road, facing west.
Police say efforts were made by fire and EMS to extract and provide medical attention to Schaller.
Troopers William Hoogerhyde, Eric Kaub, Joseph Hall, Juan Barrios, Suzanne Creelman, and Cpls. Brian Finn and Jason Toutman; and Emerald, Friedens, Slate-dale and Slatington fire departments and fire police, along with Northern Valley EMS, Carl Grega's Towing Service and Verizon assisted at the scene.
