Lady Trojans are acing tests
Remember that feeling of taking a test in high school and it actually turned out to be pretty easy? Well, for the Lady Trojans (2-0, 2-1), two of their three on-court tests this season have been pretty easy and they aced both of them. The latest test had Parkland downing Pleasant Valley 46-12 Tuesday night. That easy test was much like the first game of the season when Parkland beat East Stroudsburg South 68-44 to open the season.
There was also that one test that the girls didn't have some answers for in a 40-28 loss to Scranton Prep this past Saturday.
Against Pleasant Valley (2-2, 2-3), Parkland was able to go deep into their bench and it seemed like anyone who got any substantial playing time was able to contribute. Of the 14 players that saw any amount of time on the floor, 12 of them came away with points. Erin Bross and Sarah Stagaard led the scoring with six points each. The Trojans also took advantage of 32 Bears turnovers in the game, converting many into baskets at the other end.
"We're doing a lot of things well," said coach Wes Spence. "I'm very happy with the energy that a lot of girls play with. I really like our defensive efforts so far in the season and I think we're coming together well. As you get more games under your belt, you get more comfortable with things that we want to run and execute a little better with our offense, but I really like the effort. We're getting a lot of contributions from a lot of girls every time we step on the floor, so that's been good."
To see just how many players have been contributing, all you have to do is look at the leading scorers in each game. Against East Stroudsburg South (0-1, 0-2), Aubrey Beidelman and Erica Bross each had 12 points. Against Scranton Prep, it was Nadine Ewald who led the Parkland scorers with 8 and then Erin Bross and Stagaard were the high scorers against the Bears. On the season, four players are within six points of each other for the team's scoring lead, with Erica Bross leading the way with 23 points.
The schedule is going to get more difficult very quickly, with conference games against Northampton (0-2, 0-4) and Central Catholic (1-0, 5-0) in the near future. With the team not having been tested too hard in two of its three games, the question of how they'll respond to those tougher tests is going to be interesting to watch.
"There's positives to it and there are negatives to it [getting big, early leads]," said Spence. "We played Scranton Prep up in Scranton, which provided a sort of measuring stick for us, so we've had the opportunities to do both. We've had the opportunity to work a lot of girls in to see what they can do when given opportunities in games. We hope that, as we find ourselves in more competitive contests, that will pay off for us; they'll have some confidence, they'll have some game experience and it will be a positive for us."
Northampton pays a visit Friday night before Parkland travels to Kutztown to play Penn Wood (2-3) in the LVBR Holiday Challenge on Sunday. Before the break, the Lady Trojans also host Central Catholic Tuesday night.
