Boys look for first win

The Catasauqua boys basketball team is in a familiar, yet unfamiliar position to start the 2014-15 season. They have yet to find a win, at 0-3, but it is a place that they have been before.

Last year, in a season where the Roughies were in the Colonial League and District 11 2A final, they had a similar slow start to their season.

Injuries and some inconsistency have led to some early season losses in 2014.

"We have two starters back and our top sub from last year, so in essence we have three starters back," said head coach Eric Snyder. "But in terms of personnel it hurts because we haven't had our full team. We just seem to always be slow starters. Even last year around Christmas we were 5-5, and these kids know that we can bounce back."

For a majority of the contest Salisbury (3-0) held a lead in double figures, but the Roughies made the Falcons work to close out the game. Catty brought their deficit to within 8 at 49-41 with a little over six minutes remaining, but big fourth quarters from Dasheen Reid (25 points) and Tevon Weber (18 points) allowed Salisbury to increase their lead and keep their undefeated record on hand.

"We had a passionate halftime speech," noted Snyder. "I challenged them, and they came out and played hard. But we have to play better. We missed a ton of inside shots, and you can't do that when you're down. You can't give up 25 points in the first quarter. And we used a ton of energy that we just couldn't find all the way back.

David Wetherhold (15 points) and Dakota Schiffer (11 points) scored in double figures for Catty. Ricky Houser added seven points in the loss.

"I don't think there's anybody in the league right now head and shoulders above anybody else," added Snyder. "But they came out and smoked us tonight. But we've been beaten bad in December, but in February, we've been a different team."

There is still plenty of time for the Roughies to bounce back in this wide open league. Catty will hit the road for three games this week, at Palmerton on Tuesday, at Pen Argyl Thursday and at Northampton on Saturday.
