Birth of Jesus comes to life in Catasauqua

The Reverend Michael Byrd introduced the actors at Bethany Church's live nativity scene on Fifth Street in Catasauqua.

"This is now our third year and we made a few changes," Byrd said. "It still remains a great family event during the Christmas season."

The story of Jesus' birth was told, with the addition of vocal performances by some of the actors, including Joan Pense as Mary, Janelle Bristol and Mary Baird as shepherds and Daniel Knouse as Joseph.

One last-minute change added to the scene, as Bristol's youngest child, Jayla, substituted for the doll that was used in previous years.

"It adds a whole new meaning to a live nativity scene," said Byrd.

Baby Jayla played the role well, content to be the center of attention and listen to the songs.

Catasauqua's Bethany Church is affiliated with the Wescosville Bethany Church and many from the Westside congregation turned out to see the event.
