'Little Princess' musical a favorite for benefit
Sing for America, a Lehigh Valley group of five siblings, presents "A Little Princess: The Musical," 7 p.m. Dec. 17, 18, 19 and 20 and 2:30 p.m. Dec. 20 and 21, Scottish Rite Cathedral, 1533 Hamilton St, Allentown.
The Easton area based Gilbert siblings, Taryn, Taisa, Teara, Jewel and Jorne, produce musicals and revues as Sing For America that benefit local families whose family members serve in the United States military.
This holiday season, "A Little Princess" will also benefit the Scottish Rite Cathedral's support of the Children's Dyslexia Center of Allentown.
The siblings are especially excited to perform "A Little Princess" because it was one of their favorite movies when they were growing up.
"We knew we wanted to do a Christmas show," says Taryn, eldest of the Gilbert siblings, "and we loved 'A Little Princess' when we were kids. We found out it was being licensed as a musical and we just fell in love with it.
"We also wanted to do something that has not been overdone in the Lehigh Valley. We wanted to do something different than the usual Christmas shows like 'A Christmas Carol.'"
"A Little Princess" is the story of a privileged little girl who is raised by her beloved father. When her father dies and she is orphaned, she is forced to become a servant girl to earn her keep.
Taryn loves performing the songs in "A Little Princess," but the song "Let Your Heart Be Your Compass" is her favorite. "It has a beautiful melody and is so inspiring. The message is the same as what our musical group stands for and that is: Follow your heart."
Taryn recommends "A Little Princess" for audiences of all ages. "This is definitely a show for everyone," she says.
A special pre-show acrobatic, silk and trapeze show by Aerial 9 will be performed before the musical. The public is urged to come early to catch the pre-show.
