Hurricanes pull off a sweep of Konkrete Kids
Perhaps no one was more surprised than the Liberty Hurricanes, having swept all events in their swim meet against Northampton last week.
"I actually had no idea. We swept every event. That's so awesome," said Hurricane captain, Emily Buell.
First place winners for the Hurricane girls were Anna Lehr in the 200 free in 2:09.26, Jocelyn Baker in the 200 IM in 2:23.16, Kayla Drago in the 50 free in 26.16, Sabrina Krotzer in the 100 fly in 1:03.99, and Julia McCarthy in the 100 free in 55.42.
The 200 medley relay team of Kendra Smith, McCarthy, Grace Walters, and Drago won in 1:58.50. Chloe Kobus, Maggie Walters, Buell, and Erin Wetmore won the 200 free relay in 1:49.69, and Anna Lehr, Kobus, Baker, and Drago won the 400 free relay in 3:59.22.
Wetmore also won the 500 free in 5:41.09. Lydia Csatari placed first in the 100 back in 1:09.45, and McCarthy was first in the breaststroke in 1:11.55.
Regarding the future of the girls team, Buell said, "I'd definitely like to see the girls get on the podium [at districts]. Last year, Emmaus beat us at districts, but we beat them in the regular meet, so it would be really cool to stand on the podium this year."
First place winners for the Hurricane boys against Northampton were Alex Fitch in the 200 free in 2:00.85 and the 500 free in 5:27.50, Nolan Vanatta in the 200 IM in 2:12.09 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.23, and Evan Smith in the 50 free in 23.21.
The 200 medley relay team of Aaron Dolgos, Vanatta, Reid Rossi, and Jacob Jones placed first in 1:46.44. Jones, Brandon Hlavaty, Justin Bassett, and Jared Messics won the 200 free relay in 1:40.88, and Alex Burlew, Paul Grocholske, Jared Messics, and Jase Smith were first in the 400 free relay in 4:10.99.
Robert Negron won the 100 free in 51.81, and Alexis Calderon took first place in the 100 back in 1:02.32.
Hlavaty, one of Liberty's captains for the boys team said, "We were riled for the first meet. It was great."
Last year's 200 free relay team placed first at districts, and the Hurricanes are hoping to repeat.
"We got a lot of fast freshmen, so there's going to be a lot of competition. Until then, we'll continue to individually improve," Hlavaty said.
