Hawks King of Mountain again

Bethlehem Catholic kept racking up the hardware for their trophy case over the weekend, coming home from the King of the Mountain tournament at Central Mountain High School with their third straight team championship.

Becahi accumulated 198 points for the championship, topping Greater Latrobe (189) and Mifflin County (135) for the top finish.

Andrew Dunn (220) was the lone Hawk to come away with a title, as the Hawks had three finalists, but saw Mike Labriola (152) and Adam Soldridge (170) lose their title bouts.

"It's a really tough tournament and it gets better every year," said head coach Jeff Karam. "We did a good job getting wins in the consolations. For a lot of our guys, they're new to this and they didn't get very good seeds, so they ended up facing very good opponents early on. It's good exposure for them and it's a great way to get ourselves ready for the season."

Dunn defeated Jacob Robb of Kittanning 10-4 for the gold medal to give the Hawks at least one champion in the tournament over the past three years.

Labriola lost to Bellefonte's Trevor Corl 3-1 and Soldridge dropped a 5-0 decision to Jake Schaffer of Greater Latrobe.

Luke Carty (seventh, 113); Jake Riegel (third, 120); Luke Karam (third, 126); Stephen Maloney (sixth, 138) and Cole Karam (third, 145) each came away with medals as well.

The Hawks now turn their attention to this weekend's Beast of the East tournament, which ironically, may be the only tournament that Karam hasn't won during his tenure at Bethlehem Catholic.

"I think you may be right about that," said Karam with a laugh about not being able to bring home a Beast championship yet. "The highest we ever placed there was third, but we know this is such a tough tournament. I want to see improvement from our guys this weekend. Our conditioning needs to be better and our match strategy needs to improve. We need to clean up some things this week."
