Nursing home hot water is restored

Cedarbrook Nursing Home residents recently had to function without running hot water.

At the Nov. 26 Lehigh County Board of Commissioners meeting, county Director of General Services Rick Molchany provided an update on the situation.

According to Molchany, the pipes were turned off Nov. 23 due to an odor that was detected in the hot water.

Molchany told board members a nurse noticed the smell of petroleum originating from a faucet.

"A nurse on duty detected the odor," Molchany said.

The problem involved a pump leaking grease or petroleum, he told the board. Although the line was replaced, Molchany said water would not be turned back on until test results were returned indicating negative results for contamination.

Molchany told the board the South Whitehall Township Water and Sewer Authority was notified of the situation.

Residents and staff improvised by using water bottles, plastic utensils and taking bed baths, Molchany said.

Water was restored Dec. 1 to Wings B, C and D after tests came back negative.

In other business, the commissioners unanimously approved a number of individuals to serve on boards.

Cheryl Snyder of Upper Saucon Township was approved to serve on the Lehigh County Housing Authority with a term ending Dec. 31, 2019.

Sonja Burneister of Upper Saucon Township and William Leiner Jr, of Coplay were also reappointed to serve on the Lehigh County Mental Health and Intellectual Disabilities Advisory Board with terms ending Dec. 31, 2017.

The commissioners also reappointed William D. McQuillen of Lynn Township to serve on the Lehigh County Drug and Alcohol Advisory Board with a term ending Dec. 31, 2017.
