Fatal accident in Catasauqua is under investigation

Ellen Binder of Catasauqua died on Dec. 4 at St Luke's Hospital, Bethlehem Campus, following injuries she received in an automobile accident near the intersection of Bridge Street and Second streets in Catasauqua.

According to the Lehigh County Coroner's Office, Binder was pronounced dead at 8:55 p.m.

Coroner Scott Grim ruled the manner of death to be accidental and said it was due to multiple traumatic injuries.

According to the Catasauqua Police Department, the accident is under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police.

"All fatalities are investigated by state police," Catasauqua Police Chief Douglas Kish told The Press Monday. "We cannot comment on the incident until the accident investigation is completed."

The coroner said the incident occurred Thursday at 11:45 a.m. in the 400 block of Second Street. Binder was a pedestrian, struck by a vehicle.

The accident happened just past the Bridge and Second streets intersection, alongside the post office building when Binder, 65, either fell or inadvertently stepped from the sidewalk onto the roadway to cross the street, Kish said.

According to the Catasauqua police officer who responded to the incident, the driver made a full, legal stop at the intersection before proceeding.

A former Coplay resident, Binder lived in the senior apartments at 118 Bridge St., Catasauqua. She was a retired licensed practical nurse who had worked at Lehigh Valley Hospital and the Phoebe Home in Allentown.
