Board discusses app to track missing MacBooks

Catasauqua High School students, families and staff concerned with the security of student MacBooks can now breathe a sigh of relief.

District Network Manager Wayne Karess reported at the Dec. 4 Catasauqua School Board meeting on the Find My Mac application available on MacBooks.

When the application is enabled, it provides a unique Apple ID to each student. The free application is available on all MacBooks.

Karess said if the student saves the unique ID, the district will be able to track the device.

"The only way to track it is with a student's Apple ID," Karess said.

District Superintendent Robert Spengler said he felt the availability of the application should be discussed at a public meeting to help alleviate and answer questions regarding confidentiality and security issues.

"I know the board had some general concerns," he said. "I just thought we should discuss it briefly."

Board member Carol McCarthy suggested drafting a letter and sending it home to students and families informing them of the application.

District Solicitor David Knerr offered his support for the application.

"It's a nice thing to have," he said. "If you don't have that, you don't have knowledge [of the lost device]."

The district will draft a letter and distribute it to students and families.

In other business, the board reorganized for the 2015 academic year.

Penny Hahn was nominated and unanimously approved to serve as board president.

The board also nominated and approved Carol Cunningham to serve as vice president and Kneer to serve as solicitor at a rate of $160 per hour.

Board member Dawn Berrigan was also approved to serve as Pennsylvania School Board liaison.

During the meeting, Spengler praised CHS Principal David Ascani, district Athletic Director David Troxell and other staff for their contributions the evening before the Turkey Day game Nov. 26.

According to Spengler, volunteers were at Alumni Field until 12:30 a.m. removing snow from the field.

"Everybody pulled together," Spengler said. "It just goes to show you what a small community can accomplish."

The board will hold its next meeting 7 p.m. Jan. 6 in the district administration office board room, 201 N. 14th St.
