Theatre Review: 'Follies XV' merry, musical and bright
You'd think that after 15 installments of "Christmas City Follies," Touchstone Theatre might run out of sketches, characters and songs.
"Christmas City Follies XV," through Dec. 21, Touchstone Theatre, Bethlehem, seems to have a bottomless Christmas stocking of originality.
The Touchstone Ensemble mines the merriment, madness and myth of that most wonderful time of the year with social satire, parody and sentiment that should make the show a tour bus stop in Christmas City USA.
"Follies," created by the Ensemble and directed by Jp Jordan, Touchstone artistic director, features a multi-talented cast of seven in a two-hour show (with intermission) of 24 sketches that tickle the funnybone and touch the heart.
This edition of the "Follies" is particularly musical, with the actors singing and playing several instruments.
Favorite characters are back. The Pajama Sisters (Emma Chong, Willow Reichard-Flynn, Anna Russell, Mary Wright) "Count Their Blessings" with superb four-part harmonies.
The Old Guy (Bill George, Touchstone co-founder) reflects, resonates and reassesses his particular journey.
George and Remy Kayal present a miniature "Story Of A Match Girl."
In "Here, Kwanzaa Kitty," Joshua Neth, Allentown Public Theatre artistic director, is fearlessly funny as he assays Tom Jones and Neil Diamond in an Elvis-style white jumpsuit to the tunes, "It's Not Unusual," "What's New Pussycat" and "America."
The Ensemble really gets into it with "Mysteries In The Air," which recreates a radio play.
Anna Russell is extremely versatile, with some fine work on the viola one minute and a bizarrely hilarious characterization as "Christmas Casanova" the next.
"Elf Side Story" parodies "West Side Story" songs in a way that is charming and amusing.
Neth creates one of "Follies" more serious sketches, with "Story Of a Juggler," which is memorable. And, yes, he juggles.
"The Polar Vortex Cometh" attests to the creativity in costumes by Lisa Jordan, Touchstone managing director, and the cast, with an amazing Vortex that is a must-see.
Riechard-Flynn projects the perfect smile, with Neth as her dad and Chong as her mom, in "Guess Who's Coming To Christmas Dinner?" We won't spoil the surprise. Again, kudos to the costumers.
Touchstone Theatre's "Christmas City Follies XV" is a very merry musical. If you've never seen "Follies," don't miss it. And if you've seen "Follies," don't miss this one.
