Herman paces Pates

Freedom High School sophomore guard, Meckenzie Herman, came off the bench in the second quarter and scored her first of five triples in Freedom's 55-26 victory over Quakertown on Friday night at the Yasso-Rothrock Christmas City Classic at Liberty High School.

Herman was also named player of the game for Freedom, and Jill Martin was player of the game for Quakertown.

Herman said, "It feels really good. I haven't been on my game in awhile."

Known for her shooting ability, Herman never shied away from the three-point shot.

"I grew out of that fear. My coaches helped me with that. The first [basket] was just the start of it. I knew from then on they would go in," said Herman.

Patriot freshman forward, Hailey Silfies, won the tip-off and scored the first two points of the game. Sophomore guard, Giselle Sanchez, followed with two more points before Freedom was held scoreless for the next five minutes.

Freedom senior guard and captain, Taylor Garza, said, "We were kind of focusing on defense, and our shots just weren't falling."

Within the last minute and a half of the first quarter, however, Kyra Jefferson, Silfies, and Gia Erie combined for five points to take a 9-7 lead.

"Hailey brings a lot of height that we never really had. I've been playing with her since the summer. She's a good asset," said Garza.

In the second quarter, Herman scored three triples, and Freedom took a 20-11 halftime lead.

Garza said, "[At halftime] we talked about keeping our momentum up and trying to run through our plays."

Freedom sophomore guard, Jaiden Coyne opened the third quarter with two points, and Garza followed up with two more. Herman scored her fourth triple soon after, and hit her fifth early in the fourth quarter.

"We were running through our plays and just looking for open shots," said Garza.

Also scoring for the Patriots were Jordyn Wasserman, Erica Heaney, Autumn Washington, Kaitlyn Swint and Erika Schwoyer.

Freedom's first conference game will have been played on Tuesday, past Press deadlines, at Easton.

"It felt great [to be playing tonight]. I'm really excited for Tuesday to start the season," Garza said.
