Hawks set to make mark
It's not only the biggest story line in District 11, but it may be the most talked about story in the state with Bethlehem Catholic moving up to 3A this year for wrestling. After winning three straight PIAA 2A team titles, the Golden Hawks open their 2014-15 calendar at home Wednesday night against Northampton.
The real drama of how Becahi will change the dynamics of the local and state wrestling scene won't be presented during regular season dual meets like this week's or any other this season, but it's the postseason play that will certainly make things interesting for all parties.
The Hawks return five district champions (2A) from last year, six state qualifiers, five state medalists and two state champions to their resume heading into this winter.
It's a good group for head coach Jeff Karam to start with in this new conquest of Pennsylvania wrestling domination.
"We have a good nucleus of young guys that either couldn't get into the line up last year or were members on the junior high team," said Karam. "We're very well balanced and most of the team has some valuable experience from the past season.
"Having possibly only one or two seniors in the line up this season, it will be extremely important for the younger guys to get a lot of match experience early on. Hopefully, they will progress as we have seen in past years."
Karam's initial lineup from top to bottom looks like this: Sean Redington (106), Luke Cart y (113), Jake Riegel (120/126), Luke Karam (120/126), Joey Gould (132), Stephen Maloney (138), Cole Karam (145), Mike Labriola (152), Brandon Gallagher (160), Noah Manning (160), Adam Soldridge (170), Jody Crouse (182), Andrew Dunn (220/285), and Koti Figueroa (285).
Riegel and Karam were both state champions last year at 106 and 113 respectively, while Gould (PIAA, 4th), Maloney (PIAA, 6th), Labriola (PIAA, 7th) and Dunn (PIAA, 3rd) all came back with state medals as well.
With the Hawks facing a tougher battle in postseason wrestling this year, it will be interesting to see how they fare or dominate the 3A scene at districts and regionals.
The Hawks will certainly move at least a handful of wrestlers to the PIAA tournament again, but how many will advance and how many will come home with medals?
Whether Becahi can challenge for the state team title this year will be up for debate, as they will assuredly be in contention for the District 11 team championship.
Winning a fourth straight PIAA team title may be a bit of a reach for this younger Hawks squad, but you can never put anything out of the question for Karam's crew.
"I'm really excited to see how we stand with some of the best AAA teams in the area and the state," Karam said. "I have a really nice group of juniors and I think we could be a year away from challenging at the state level, but these guys have surprised me in the past, so you never know what can happen this year.
"We have been fortunate the past few years staying pretty much injury free by the post season. think that will play an important role not only for us, but any team that is looking to challenge in the post season."
