Hawks fall; LHS, FHS all win
The 11th annual Yasso-Rothrock Christmas City Classic almost saw all of Bethlehem's schools go undefeated over the weekend, but that didn't happen when Bethlehem Catholic saw their girls and boys teams fall Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Hawk girls fell to Scranton Prep 54-52 and the boys followed that up with a contest against Parkland, that proved to be a one-sided affair, as the Trojans had no trouble dismantling Becahi 74-46.
Devante Cross scored 17 points and won the MVP award for Parkland, as the Trojans (2-0) built a 38-18 halftime lead and never looked back.
DeAndre Tillet led Becahi with 18 points, as the Hawks look to hold the fort down while football players Antwan Keenan and EJ Fineran wait to come back after dealing with some lingering football-related injuries.
"I think we got a lot of growing to do and we really haven't been able to see all the guys play together," said Hawks head coach Mike Frew. "We're a different team when we get those guys back. We're a very youthful team out there, but it's still coming together. We didn't have many varsity starts out there on the floor."
The Becahi girls were downed in Jose Medina's coaching debut, battling back from a 15-point deficit, only to see their effort fall in the final minute.
Kalista Walters, who scored a team-high 22 points, evened the score at 52 in the final minute, but a turnover by the Hawks led to a pair of free throw for Prep, which eventually gave the Classics the two-point win.
Saturday's final two games saw the Freedom boys take out Scranton-area Riverside 64-55, as Nick Young was named the team's MVP en route to a 23-point performance.
Liberty's boys then capped off the weekend with a 63-57 win over Emmaus for their first EPC win of the season.
Trenton Bishop was MVP for the Hurricanes with his 13 points and nine rebounds.
Friday's opening girls games saw Freedom top Quakertown 55-26 and Liberty beat Stroudsburg 44-39.
