Young wrestlers will help team reload
There is good news and bad news for Parkland's wrestling team heading into the 2014-15 season.
The bad news is the program loses eight quality wrestlers to graduation. The good news is head coach Ryan Nunamaker has seen an increase in numbers that can hopefully make up for some of those losses for a team that finished last season with a 20-4 record and was the runner up at District 11 team duals, just one point behind Nazareth.
One of the most decorated wrestlers that has come through Parkland, Ethan Lizak, was a district champion once again last year at 120 pounds. The Trojans also lose another district champion in Nezar Haddad in the 195 weight class. Josh Ortman finished second at 152 pounds.
"We have many freshmen and sophomores breaking into the lineup this year due to the fact we had eight starting seniors graduate last season," Nunamaker said. "Our depth in some weight classes will be a little thin this season."
But there are a lot of returning district qualifiers for Nunamaker to insert into his lineup.
Senior Jacob Lizak placed third in the 113 pound weight class, and fellow classmate Omar Haddad earned silver at 220 pounds. Along with these two, Nick Bauer, Andrew Mastrangelo, Tom Yankanich, Brayson Haas, Lee Todora, Rob Wetherhold, and Frank Guida are back.
"We have several wrestlers returning with much post season experience," said Nunamaker. "We have great leadership from our returning wrestlers. We have great numbers with 36 wrestlers participating this season. Our wrestlers work well together, have a positive attitude, and work hard on a regular basis."
Nunamaker will also look to newcomers to contribute like Nick Dolak, Zach Ortman, Nathan Freyer and Jahan Worth.
"Our goal is to improve each practice and learn from our mistakes," said Nunamaker. "We will definitely work hard every day on our technique, drilling, and conditioning in hopes of reaching our potential. As a team we hope to qualify for the state duals in early February. From an individual standpoint we hope to advance as many wrestlers as possible through the postseason."
