WHS continues to build
It was a season of adjustments for the Whitehall girls volleyball team as they look to make some net gains heading into 2015.
The Zephs came into the season with new head coach Laura Hausman taking over the program. Hausman emphasized that she didn't want to focus on wins and losses; instead, her goal was to stay competitive and get better every day.
"We came into this season with no expectation about results," said Hausman. "We as a coaching staff knew it would be a building year, and that it would be this way for a couple years. That's what happens with new coaching staffs, especially when they change the program upside down like we have."
The Zephs got out of the gate quickly, but ran into rough sledding once they began division play in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. They stayed resilient, bouncing back after losses, and had an opportunity to qualify for the postseason with a win in their last game.
However, they couldn't rise above Notre Dame- Green Pond in their final game. The Zephs finished the season at 8-10 and 7-9 in the EPC.
All thorough the season, it remained a learning process. Hausman instituted some different offensive systems, alternating between a 5-1 and a 6-2, hoping to find the right fit for her team.
"The girls learned a lot of skill and technical knowledge that they didn't previously have and it was a great time being able to watch them grow through hard work," Hausman said. "We put them in several different line ups and ran different offenses which is something I have told the girls to get used to because we don't hesitate to make changes when things aren't working."
The Zephs will lose a number of talented seniors who made valuable contributions all season. Their leadership and experience helped smooth that transition. Graduating will be Tanesia Rehrig, Rebecca Lutterschmidt, Liz Lynch, Charlotte Connors and Marla Shaffer.
While that's a lot of experience exiting the program, they still have a number of players returning who will form a strong foundation. They include Emily Castro, Cristal Fernandez, Korin Koehler, Kristin Spengler, Anna Gallina and Autumn Puello.
With one year under her belt, Hausman is looking forward to growing the program as they head into an offseason that will afford them more familiarity.
"The upcoming year we will continue to grow and work hard," said Hausman. "The girls will put a lot of time into toffseasonson both on and off the court. Next season they'll be a new team and it'll be exciting to see what they can produce."
