Lady Trojans have depth, experience in 2014-15
A year ago, Parkland girls basketball head coach Wes Spence wasn't sure who was going to be in his starting lineup for opening night since his team had graduated all five starters from the 2012-2013 season.
Fast forward to the present and once again, he's wondering who is going to be in his starting lineup for opening night. But this time it's because he has so many players to choose from. The dilemma comes from a successful season where Spence readily mixed and matched players as they gained a lot of varsity experience.
"We only graduated three seniors and we played nine or 10 girls a night, so we're bringing back a lot of girls with experience," Spence said. "Hopefully we're going to be able to rely on all of them and my plan is to be able to play a lot of girls."
Aubrey Beidelman, Erica and Erin Bross, Nadine Ewald, Samantha O'Keefe, Brooke Robertson and Sarah Stagaard all return to the team, giving Spence a number of options for his starting lineup. With all of the experience, Spence doesn't figure on getting away from his philosophy of playing a number of players in every game.
"We've always relied on a system where it's any girl on any night, versus running through the same one or two players over the course of a season," he said. "We like to play a style where we like to get up-and-down and like to be aggressive, so I think the more we can keep fresh girls on the floor, the more that works to our advantage."
That experience is going to come in handy, because the Lady Trojans are going to have plenty of competition.
The LVC has morphed into the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, with six new teams added to the mix. The divisional realignment has Parkland in the Skyline Division with Nazareth, Northampton and Whitehall, who were all division foes in the LVC and figure to again be competitive. Add to that Central Catholic and Emmaus and the division becomes a wide open battle.
"I thought our division in the LVC was very difficult with Nazareth, Northampton and Whitehall," Spence said. "In the five years that I've been here, all four teams in that division had been in the league playoffs at least once and three of us Northampton, Nazareth and us have all won district titles in those five years, so I thought we were already in a very difficult division. Then you add Central and Emmaus to it and obviously, it doesn't make it any easier.
"Emmaus has always been a traditional rival and playing them twice a year may be nice and Central Catholic always has great teams, so it's great competition for us twice a year. We're looking forward to it."
Last season's team lost to Central Catholic in the LVC semifinals, but then rebounded to win districts, downing new conference foe Pocono Mountain West in the finals. In states, the Lady Trojans made it to the second round before losing to West Chester Rustin. With the experience that this year's team has, the odds are good that Parkland will again be able to go deep into the playoffs, but Spence isn't resting on laurels.
"Our goals are similar to what they've been in years past," he said. "We hope we're good enough to put ourselves in position to play for league and district championships and to be able to get into the state playoff like we did last year.
"Our goal each year is to try to build on the success of the previous years. I don't like to foreshadow things; I'll tell you in March how we'll be."
