Character leads girls volleyball to state title
Walt Disney could not have written a better script. The Parkland girls volleyball team was not a Cinderella by any means. The Lady Trojans the best team in the state for much of the year, but the 2014 season was a magical one.
They finished the year undefeated at 45-0-1 in all sets, and won 115 of 122 games played in the sets, on their way to league, district, and state championships.
"Character carries everyone," said head coach Mike Krause, who has now won his second state title in the last four years. "Individually, all of these girls had great character and they were so competitive. They believed in each other and when you do that, you are a strong unit."
Parkland did not have much trouble dispatching each opponent that was put in front of it all year. This included playing in their tournament, which featured Class AA district champ and state runner up Bethlehem Catholic, and Class A state champ Marian Catholic.
It didn't take much for Krause to motivate his team, even with the perfect record and the hype of having a number one ranking in the state. With each game, the Trojans had a target on their backs, and District 11 features some elite talent, with two teams winning state titles in 2014. The sting of falling short of the big dance a year ago also was always in the backs of their minds.
"The girls are so competitive, and we looked for different ways to keep them motivated throughout the year," said Krause. "We individually challenged them on their goals. In practice, they all wanted to perform better and play better during games. Our league is the best in PA. It develops our team all year with tough matchups."
The scary thing is, the Trojans should be favored to repeat in 2015. They return nearly a full roster except for the graduations of Brooke Robertson and Kristin Keck.
"Kristin [Keck] showed the girls how hard work can develop you," said Krause. "She had the will and desire to be successful every night. Brooke was very coachable and a team player. She did whatever was asked of her to help the team win, and that included switching positions at the beginning of the year."
Kristin Krause, Avery Semler, Sienna Salvaggio, Erika Foose, Sam Webber, Sam Graver, Morgan Sherwin, Megan Shaw, and Kirah Dreisbach will begin their work toward a successful 2015 season with club volleyball and voluntary workouts. But Krause also noted that he encourages the girls to play other sports to stay well-rounded.
