At initial glance, Freedom High School's girls basketball team roster is surprising in that it is filled with mostly sophomores and freshmen.
"You can tell we're young, but halfway through the season, I'm hoping to be telling you that we're moving in the right direction," said Patriot coach Ron Garza, back for his third season.
Freedom's three returners are seniors, Taylor Garza, Gia Erie, and sophomore, Jaiden Coyne. All should be starting for the Patriots first game this weekend in the Yasso-Rothrock Tournament. Sophomore, Giselle Sanchez, and freshman, Hailey Silfies will be most likely be rounding out the starting line-up.
"Jaiden directs us on the court and keeps us going forward. With Hailey, we have a little more height beneath the basket, but she can play on the inside too," Garza said.
Garza will be looking to Taylor Garza and Erie for leadership.
"We've never been this young. It's literally going to be one day at a time. We lost four seniors who played the majority of the time," said Garza.
The Patriots experienced success this summer, winning the Summer Catasauqua League.
"They're meshing pretty good," Garza said.
Freedom's roster also includes seniors, Autumn Washington and Jennifer Capuano.
Freedom's season opener is scheduled for this weekend against Quakertown at Liberty High School.
