Lower Macungie twp. Board of Commissioners

There are lots on the corner of Schantz Road and Hamilton Boulevard behind Dunkin' Donuts that have gone through various consolidations. The property in question is being requested by Ciocca Subaru to become part of its car lot.

There is another point of entry for the proposed addition to the lot on Cedarbrook Road. Included in this proposal is an alley between Dunkin' Donuts, a credit union and Eastern Industries to be considered. The alley does provide another access to these properties but it is unspecified as to its purpose, including the size of the alley. The proposal does not necessarily allow for two lanes of traffic.

There are heritage sycamore trees on the property. It was strongly suggested the trees be saved.

William Erdman, township engineer, announced his retirement. He has been the township engineer for 41 years. Alan Fornwalt will become the new engineer around the beginning of 2015.

The Quarry Park upgrade continues to be a topic of interest. Several residents have requested for the project to be removed from the budget.

There is a concern the Quarry Park project was rushed. Residents have sent letters and emails voicing opposition. Susan Cunin, a resident, has voiced concerns. One item of interest is why not also improve Creamery Park fields.

Further questions from Cunin also included why there is no response from commissioners when voicing concerns or asking questions. President Ryan Conrad said no response is required for "public comment."

Commissioners Ron Beitler and Douglas Brown also expressed their concerns for the park project when advertising of the budget was requested. Beitler is not against the improvements, just the synthetic fields. Former Commissioner Joe Pugliese suggested proper studies were not conducted.

"The township residents need more time," Pugliese said.

An amendment was suggested by Brown and Beitler to drop the $3.3 million park project from the budget. The amendment did not pass in a 3-2 vote. Brown and Beitler voted for the amendment while Lancsek, Higgins and Conrad voted against the amendment. The vote to advertise the budget was also 3-2 with Beitler and Brown opposed and Higgins, Conrad and Lanscek in support.

Lower Macungie Township was awarded certification of workplace safety. This gives the township a 5 percent discount on workmen's compensation.

The Pennsylania Department of Transportation will conduct a traffic study along Spring Creek. The traffic study will occur in the next four to six weeks.

For the month of January, The Board of Commissioner meetings will adjust due to the holiday schedule. The board of commissioners will meet Jan. 8 and 22, 2015. The regular schedule will resume in February.

In other meeting news, Daniel Vassilaros, deputy tax collector, submitted a letter of resignation. Dennis Gouldy was appointed to replace Vassilaros. Kirk, Summa and Co., LLP, were named auditors for Lower Macungie Township.
