"Deck The Halls With The Sounds Of Gospel" brings singers and dancers from seven Lehigh Valley churches to perform gospel favorites at 6 p.m. Dec. 6, Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown.
Shiloh Baptist Church, Easton, and Life Church and Union Baptist Church, both Allentown, are among area churches represented in "Deck The Halls." Songs performed will include "Joy to the World," "Mary, Did You Know?" and "This Christmas."
Team David, an all-male local gospel recording group with Malaco Records, will be featured in the show. Dancers will open the show and perform throughout.
"Deck The Halls," organized and hosted by Gerry Pegues of Allentown, is in its second year.
Pegues, a singer and member of Life Church, will perform and sing. There will be a person signing in American Sign Language.
Pegues was inspired to create a local gospel show after seeing a similar show at the House of Blues, Los Angeles.
"This is something I've wanted to do for years," says Pegues in a phone interview. "I just fell in love with that show at the House of Blues and I wanted to create something similar here in the Valley.
"Last year, there was a full house for our first gospel Christmas show and I knew I wanted to do it again this year. I would love for it to be an annual performance."
Gospel music can be traced back to the religious revival of the 19th century, with roots in the African-American community. Gospel is known for dominant vocals with Christian lyrics.
Pegues describes gospel music as "uplifting, inspirational and soul-stirring."
"It's perfect for this time of year," she says.
