Liberty High School's girls basketball coach Becky Soto, is raising the bar for the Hurricanes this season.
With Kay West, Maddie Capuano, and Taysia Snead leading the way as captains and varsity returners, Soto is excited for her second year as head coach.
"Kay is our point guard, and we expect a lot from her. There's a lot of pressure on her, but she's ready. She likes to be a leader and pick up the other players. She feels like this is her team, and that's what we've been waiting for.
Maddie moved up from j.v. to varsity halfway through the season as a freshman. The other players can see actual transforming, and she's consistent. As a player and a person, she is kind-hearted.
Taysia is loud. When the gym is quiet, she's talking. She ignites everyone. She's contagious," said Soto.
Other returners include Rena Dejesus, Cailey Sanchez, and Tori Zerbe.
"Our biggest thing is continuity. We're taking it game by game," Soto said.
Soto is pleased with what she sees as her team having each others' backs.
"I say I have five spots open, and they want it, but they have to trust each other to get it. It's hard to balance that," she said.
Soto is also seeing versatility in some of her players and a very athletic team in the Hurricanes.
"I'm looking forward to getting that first win under our belt. They know do go in, know your role, and do your job," said Soto.
