Becahi girls basketball coach Megan Dellegrotti resigns
The Megan Dellegrotti show was canceled before it even started for Bethlehem Catholic's girls basketball program.
Dellegrotti, who was hired last April, abruptly resigned late Monday night, just 12 days before the Hawks season opener against Scranton Prep on Dec. 6.
The resignation was a complete shock to Becahi Athletic Director Chris Domyan.
"I was very surprised," said Domyan. "Megan has to make her own choices and I was hoping she wouldn't resign this way. We were really happy with what she was doing. It's really an unfortunate circumstance."
Dellegrotti came to Becahi after five seasons at the helm of Southern Lehigh, where her teams compiled a 104-28 mark. She replaced Bill Lanscek, who was 161-97 in 10 years as head coach of the Hawks. Becahi won its second-straight Lehigh Valley Conference and District 11 3A championships last winter, but Lanscek was not rehired.
Dellegrotti was hired 11 days after Lanscek's departure last March, and has now ran out of the program after one week of official practices.
Domyan declined to discuss the reasons for Dellegrotti's resignation, citing, "it had nothing to do with the basketball or our relationship. It was something outside."
A phone call seeking comment made to Dellegrotti's cell phone was not returned Tuesday afternoon.
Sources close to the situation have indicated that there was a conflict with one of Dellegrotti's assistants being on the staff, which led her to the abrupt resignation.
Dellegrotti wasn't at practice on Monday and Domyan informed the girls in the program Tuesday morning of the move.
"They were upset," Domyan said of the players' response, "but we have a very talented group of seniors led by Kalista Walters, Maggie Melhem and Nicole Lacherza. They're ready to pick themselves up quickly and I think we have a silver lining in the works when this is all said and done."
Domyan has been working since Monday night on finding a replacement for Dellegrotti and it appears that an announcement for a new head coach will come before Thanksgiving.
"I have a plan in place and I'm confident we can make this a positive from a sad situation," he said. "The plan will unfold pretty quickly, but I can't comment any further right now."
