Wailers keep the Marley flame burning in Bethlehem
Reggae music has never stopped evolving, but for millions around the world it's still defined by the songs of Bob Marley and the Wailers.
For 43 years, it's been Marley's heartbeat rhythms that have inspired so much of what's followed as evidenced by the enduring popularity of the "one-drop" reggae sound.
The Wailers bring that legendary sound back to the Lehigh Valley, 8:30 p.m. Nov. 28, Musikfest Café, ArtsQuest Center, SteelStacks, 101 Founders Way, Bethlehem.
The history of the band during Marley's lifetime is well-known.
"The band's job is to keep Bob's legacy," says lead singer Dwayne "Danglin" Anglin in a phone interview. "He will not be dead as long as we keep on spreading his message."
Their message is a powerful and uplifting one in the midst of the holiday season.
"We preach good vibrations. Nothing negative can come from positive," Anglin says.
That the message has spread has the numbers to prove it.
The Wailers' music has sold in excess of 250 million albums worldwide.
In England alone, the Wailers has notched more than 20 chart hits, including seven Top 10 entries.
This was no accident. Apart from Marley, the Wailers has performed with Sting, Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, as well as reggae legends Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer and Burning Spear.
Their most recent collaborators include Kenny Chesney, Eve, Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat.
They've also completed innumerable tours over the years, playing to an estimated 24 million across the globe, including groundbreaking performances in Africa and the Far East.
The Musikfest Cafe concert kicks off a cross-country tour, continuing through Dec. 7 and resuming in late January.
The Wailers' United States' tour celebrates the 30th anniversary and recent Billboard Top 200 charting of the rerelease of the renowned 1984 album, "Legend."
The album jumped to the No. 5 spot, first time it has reached the Top 10 since its initial release 30 years ago.
Legend features well-known Marley hits, including: "Stir it Up," "Jamming," "No Woman, No Cry," "Get Up Stand Up" and "Redemption Song."
The Wailers is expected to perform the album in its entirety at the Bethlehem show.
"Thank-you for the support. It's what has kept us on the charts for 26 years, keeps our message of 'one love' spreading, and pays tribute to the life of Bob Marley," Anglin says.
