Magnan signs

Freedom High School senior, Sam Magnan, signed a National Letter of Intent to pursue his college education and swimming career at the University of Virginia on Nov. 12, at Freedom High School.

In attendance were Freedom athletic director Diane Jordan, Magnan's parents, coaches, and friends.

Magnan gave the university a verbal commitment in September after also considering North Carolina State and the University of Michigan.

"It's a big weight lifted off my shoulders. I'm really relieved. The process actually started in September of my junior year," Magnan said.

Magnan had the opportunity to get important insight about the University of Virginia when he spent time with members of the swim team during his official visit in September.

"They filled in the doubt you have when you get there," said Magnan.

For one, the Cavaliers have a relatively new coaching staff, headed by Augie Busch, as well as strong senior leaders.

During his visit, Magnan had a one-on-one meeting with Busch and discussed schedules, training, and scholarships, among other things.

Also, while spending time with the captain of the men's swim team, Magnan was told that not only would he get the best education at the University of Virginia, but that the athletic department is one of the best in the country.

Magnan is expecting to swim the 500 free, 1,000 free, and the mile next season, but just as important is the camaraderie he felt with the team during his visit.

"That was one of the best parts. It felt kind of natural. I liked all of them, and I fit right in," Magnan said.

One of the highlights of Magnan's visit was the opportunity to storm the football field after the Cavaliers beat Louisville. Magnan also saw Virginia defeat Virginia Tech in soccer.

The University of Virginia's men's swim team last won the Atlantic Coastal Conference Championship in 2013.

Magnan is planning to major in business.
