LHS returns five divers this year

Liberty High School will return five divers to its team for the 2014-2015 season, hoping to add several more in the upcoming weeks.

Senior, Samantha Kincaid, juniors, Reagan Morrison, Rachel Finn, and Hannah Grinchuk, and sophomore, Meryem Okumus are all returning.

Kincaid's strengths will include the height she attains off the board and the fact that her dives are more defined, according to coach Jeff Zettlemoyer.

Regarding Finn, Zettlemoyer said, "Rachel moved her degrees of difficulty up last year, and I am encouraging her to keep climbing, as well as Sam."

Eleven-dive meets are where high degrees of difficulty matter most.

"Reagan moved up to 2.2s from 1.9s, Hannah needs to move her dds up, and over the summer, Meryem got her back one with a one-and-a-half twist," said Zettlemoyer.

In dual meets, each team is allowed to use three or four male divers and three or four female divers, depending on the number of lanes in a swimming pool. In the past, if a team had a shortage of male divers and an abundance of female divers, a girl could compete as a boy. This year, however, the PIAA has rescinded that allowance.

"We can't have crossovers, so there will be some jockeying with our top five, and I'll try to rotate them in and out," Zettlemoyer said. "We can dive the others as exhibition so that they can try to qualify for districts."

Newcomers to the Hurricane diving team include freshmen Brianna Roberts, Yanissa Grullon and Sean Gergenheimer. With only one boy on the team as of Press deadlines, the Canes are looking for more boys to add to their roster.
