Class is in session for Junie B. at Miller Symphony Hall
Lindsay Janecek plays beloved children's book character Junie B. Jones in the musical, "Jingle Bells, Batman Smells," which comes to the Lehigh Valley at 2 p.m. Nov. 29, Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown.
Janecek, a Bedford, Tex., native, has been performing on stage since age six when she was reading "Junie B."
"I grew up reading all of her books," she says in a phone interview.
The "Junie B. Jones" stories are a series of New York Times best-selling children's chapter books written by Barbara Park and illustrated by Denise Brunkus. More than 50 million "Junie B." books have been published.
The books are written from the perspective of Juniper Beatrice "Junie B." Jones as she navigates life in kindergarten and first grade.
"Junie B. is very, very sassy. She thinks she is always right. She is very stubborn. But she cares very much for other people and you see that exhibited in the show."
Janecek attributes the success of the "Junie B." series to the relate-ability of the character.
"Younger girls can understand Judy. They relate to her and to the kids in her class and all the silly things that happen."
The stage show, "Jingle Bells, Batman Smells," is focused on the holidays. Junie B. and her classmates in Room One are planning a holiday party when Junie B. draws the name of her "arch nemesis," Tattletale May, in the Secret Santa gift exchange.
Janecek's favorite scene in the musical includes Tattletale May.
"May and I are fighting and pulling each other's sweaters. It's a lot of fun and gets a lot of laughs."
Over the course of the 57-minute show, Junie B. learns the true meaning of the holiday spirit.
Janecek recommends the show for children from preschool to sixth grade.
It's a fun show for so many ages.Kids will enjoy it and parents will, too. It's a really heartwarming holiday production."
